Somerset O60’s v Trojans

The Somerset O60 Men Masters completed an enjoyable season with a friendly fixture away to Trojans in Southampton on Sunday 5th April.

It proved to be a closely fought affair but the Somerset side were sharper in front of goal to record a 3-1 win. Tim Brothers, making his début, opened the scoring in the first half. The lead was extended when Jon Marshall converted a penalty flick early in the second half. This was followed by an excellent strike from Ian Redfearn following a flowing team move.

The hosts converted a short corner in the closing stages which proved poor reward for dominating possession for long periods of the match.

Over 60’s Masters 5 Wales Dragons Over 60’s 2

On Sunday 8th June Somerset completed a double over their Welsh rivals by winning 5-2 at the University of Bath Sports Training Village, this followed their 7-2 win Cwmbran earlier in the year.

The Dragons started the stronger and could have gone 2 goals up but for fine keeping from Dave Parker and his defenders. Slowly the home side got into their stride and scored two in quick succession. Firstly a magnificent long ball into the D from debutant Gordon Plummer was slammed home on the far post by Steve French and the Dave Ward worked himself into the D on the right to fire home. The second half was an end to end affair but two more from Dave Ward from penalty corners and a near post deflection by Nick Kendall following another magnificent left wing cross from Steve Scott. The visitors had pulled two back with two well worked and deserved goals.

This is the first season that the Somerset Masters O60’s have enjoyed, winning all three matches. They look forward to next season when its hoped that we can play matches at all Masters age groups.

Wales Dragons O60  2  Somerset O60 7

Somerset Masters O60’s played their second fixture of their inaugural season
against a Wales Dragons side on Sunday 24th March.

The match was due to be played in Brecon but snow fall saw a late switch the
Cwmbran Stadium.

The visitors started strongly and dominated long periods of the first half
leading to goals for 2 open play goals for Lu Piscena , one for Steve French
and another for Jon Marshall. Wales pulled one back just before the break so
see a 1-4 half time score.

The home side improved at the start of the second half and were rewarded
with an own goal from Nick Grimshaw after a hard struck cross flew into the
net as he challenged for the ball.

This spurred a series of flowing Somerset moves leading to more goals from
Jon Tripp & a second from Steve French. To cap a fine team performance
Maurice Pearce finished a well worked short corner routine.

The squad look forward to the return fixture in Bath on June 9th.

of Bath Sports Training Village.

Two evenly matched sides enjoyed an end to end affair but open play goals
from David Ward and Lu Piscena were enough to see the home side prevail.

Its hoped to arrange occasional fixtures on an ongoing basis so anybody
interested in playing or providing opposition should get in touch with –
